What to Expect from Bellak Math Prep
It is difficult for a math teacher to cover all the required mathematical topics in the curriculum, let alone also prepare students for standardized test-taking. Therefore, additional preparation beyond the classroom is desirable. No one, including Bellak Math Prep, can “teach the test” or "insure success", but the more
practice and preparation, the better.
Problem solving strategies and test-taking strategies are included in the program and should help students improve their self-confidence in math. An inherent part of the program is an emphasis on positive attitudes, a willingness to put forth effort, and goal setting.
These programs are not homework help or tutoring. Instead, topics are taught using the Bellak Approach, which includes detailed explanations for clarity, tips and tricks to make the material easier to understand and remember, and the Bellak shortcuts. There will be overlap with the regular classroom lessons, and so the content of these programs will enhance what is taught in the classroom.
Students should be aware of the current regulations for math courses. (Keep in mind that politicians change these rules often.)
FCAT will still be tested through 8th grade.
10th graders still have to take and pass FCAT in order to graduate.
9th graders will not have to take FCAT. Instead, they will have the graduation requirement of taking the STATE Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam. Not getting a certain score, but taking the test. If they take the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam when they are taking the course, the test will count as 30% of their grade. Students who had Algebra 1 in middle school will take the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam as 9th graders even though they are in Geometry or Algebra 2.
Bellak Math Prep can assist students as they prepare for these exams.
